Adventures is around the corner

 


A lot of this is repeat from some things I've posted on Facebook and Instagram, but here it is again with a few more details.

I've been planning a long bike ride that is about to commence in a few weeks and thought maybe I should document it a bit on social media for posterity sake. Get ready for amazing cross-Utah bike action shots. I'll be riding from Franklin, ID to Colorado City, AZ - pretty much a straight shot north-to-south through the entire state of Utah. 501 miles. 15,757 feet of elevation climb. 6 nights, 7 days of riding ending in St. George UT.

I've already been told many versions of "but you'll die", but I'm drawn to the idea of trying anyway (not the dying part, the bike riding part). I think I need to get a better "feel" for Utah and the best way I can think to do that is to ride my bike slowly through it's spine. Maybe I'm a little bit in need of an adventure that lets me explore new roads. Clear my mind by sitting on a bike for hours at a time - hoping, seeking, looking, listening for something...

Let's call it Mike's-Epic-Utah-Bike-Ride or MEUBR for short. I've been planning and preparing for it for months (well, really maybe years) and it is a few weeks away. Nervous excitement constantly hoping the Indian Summer we have been experiencing holds for just a bit longer.

  I asked for questions on my first post on Facebook and Instagram.  Here are some answers:   What is this?  Is this an organized ride that you are a part of a group or something?   This will be a solo - self-supported, credit-card tour .  That means the following:       Solo:   I'll be riding by myself most days (some followers for a few miles are always welcome).        Self-supported:   I'll carry all my own gear for the week, no support vehicle behind or in front.        Credit-card touring: I plan to stay mostly at family, friends, or hotels and motels along the way, so I don't plan on taking a lot of camping gear.  I may camp one or two nights - I'm still undecided.  I'm mostly planning on paying for food along the way - I hope to be in a town with a grocery store every night. Familiar Roads

Hello world!  This is a new blog about my cycling adventures.  I took a ride close to home last Friday and took some pictures of what I get to see close to home.  I'm eager to ride into new places, but aware that I live in one of the best places in the country to be bike riding.  Cache Valley is full of straight and long country roads with views of mountain all around.  Country homes come with smiling faces.  I love riding here and love being outside on fall days like we've had recently.  The worries of the summer heat causing dehydration and, with it, heat exhaustion, are distant.  The exhaustion you feel these days is real!  Benson Marina near Benson, Utah.  The Bear River flows through much of the western side of Cache County and its flow is maintained by the Cutler Reservoir on the west side of the valley.  History says Jim Bridger, the mountain man, explorer, and map maker, took the Bear River by canoe through this area e...
